Musical Theatre Repertoire and Vocal Requirements

Moderator: Rachelle Fleming

Date/Time: Monday, June 21, 2021, 8:00 PM Eastern

While musical theatre remains an accessible performance opportunity for young singers, the vocal requirements are more strenuous and varied than ever. This forum hopes to provide information and resources for vocologists who work with musical theatre performers as they navigate the challenges of a highly competitive audition scene. With live theatre resuming performances in many places this fall, now is a great time to revisit the requirements of repertoire and vocal technique for singers at musical theatre auditions. The presentation will include updates to Warren Freeman’s published research and explore new trends in the industry.

Warren Freeman has played leading musical theatre roles across the United States and Canada, and continues to work in New York City as a singer, cabaret performer, and voiceover artist. As music director, he creates original arrangements and orchestrations for the National Broadway Chorus, the American Pops Orchestra, BC/EFA Easter Bonnet, and for new musicals at Signature Theatre. Warren received his BFA in Musical Theatre from Penn State University and MM in Vocal Pedagogy from Shenandoah Conservatory. He currently teaches voice at both Temple University and NYU.
